Below are five Nobel Prize winners who have made significant contributions to our understanding of climate change. These scientists and environmental advocates shed light on the intricate processes that govern our planet’s climate system and advocated for action to mitigate its consequences. These Nobel Prize winners advanced scientific knowledge and also fostered global awareness in the fight against Climate change. Read on to learn more about these Nobel Prize winners and how they contributed to our understanding of the earth’s changing conditions.

1. Syukuro Manabe

Syukuro Manabe won a Nobel Prize for his contributions to our understanding of how greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, can drive global warming. He created atmospheric models that mimicked the Earth’s climate. These models showed how greenhouse gases were changing the planet’s temperature. This contributed greatly to our understanding of Climate change. In 2021, Syukuro Manabe was jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on Climate change. Variations of his models continue to be used today.

2. Klaus Hasselmann

In 2021, Klaus Hasselmann was jointly awarded a Nobel Prize in Physics for his work creating a model that helped to identify how human activity influenced the Earth’s climate. This model allowed us to better understand how human activity drove Climate change. His model helped show that carbon dioxide emissions significantly impacted the planet’s climate and atmosphere.

3. Al Gore

American politician, businessman, and environmentalist Albert Arnold Gore Jr. won a Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 for his work as an environmental advocate. The former vice president of the United States was outspoken about the effects of Climate change. Throughout his career, he attempted to highlight the importance of the climate crisis and put it on the political agenda. He has used his influence to raise awareness about Climate change and highlight the urgency of action. This outspokenness ultimately made him a Nobel Prize winner.

4. Paul J. Crutzen

In 1995, Paul J. Crutzen received a joint Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on atmospheric chemistry and specifically how nitrous oxide degrades the ozone layer that surrounds the earth. He was also one of the first to posit the theory that thinning ozone layers near the poles may have been caused by the emission of greenhouse gasses. His work greatly contributed to our understanding of Climate change and how it affects our atmosphere.

5. Mario J. Molina

Mario J. Molina was another joint recipient of the 1995 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He was the first to realize that chlorofluorocarbons could destroy ozone. He then became an important environmental advocate, educating people about ozone depletion and the effects of chlorofluorocarbons. Molina was also instrumental in researching what caused the ozone hole in the Antarctic

These 10 Nobel Prize winners have made significant contributions to science while drastically altering our understanding of Climate change. Their work altered how we perceive the planet’s dynamically shifting environment and drew global awareness to the pressing issues facing earth and humanity. Our understanding of the intricate processes that drive Climate change was greatly shaped by these Nobel Prize winners. Additionally, honoring them drew increased awareness of the struggle against climate change
