3. Beagle Finally Has Freedom After 9 Years Locked in Lab Cage & Used for Testing

Beagles are often used as laboratory testing subjects due to their small size and friendly, easygoing nature. These poor dogs are subjected to heartbreaking mistreatment. They undergo a variety of tortuous tests that cause them pain, injury, or even death. Additionally, they are kept in small kennels for the duration of their lives and are deprived of important exercise, socialization, and companionship. Although recent years have seen an uptick in public outrage over experimentation on Beagles and other animals, the practice continues.

4. Over 140 Cats Dumped to Die in Abu Dhabi Desert, Prompting Outrage

Over 140 cats, as well as two dogs, were abandoned and left to die in the Abu Dhabi desert. The animals were discovered in the al-Falah area. Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates. Temperatures in the area where the cats were discovered can climb to 122 degrees Fahrenheit. Many of the cats were found dead in the sand, or trapped inside the carriers they were abandoned in. Others had been left loose but without access to food, shelter, or water. The horrifying incident has prompted a government investigation and outrage from animal lovers as well as animal advocacy groups.

5. Eyesight Plays Key Role in Elephants’ Balance, Study Finds

A new study published in the scientific journal Biology Letters reveals the impact that elephants’ vision has on their balance. The study was authored by Max Kurz and John Hutchinson. Dr. Kurz is a neuroscientist and physiologist. Dr. Hutchinson is a professor of evolutionary biometrics. By blindfolding trained Asian elephants, the two researchers were able to test their hypothesis that these large creatures rely heavily on their eyesight to maintain their balance. The experiment was carried out with Asian elephants who have been trained as animal actors for movies and television shows. The elephants came from Have Trunk Will Travel, an animal training company that has been accused of animal cruelty in the past.

A new study published in conjunction with the University of Toronto finds that dwindling sea ice may have a significant impact on nursing mother Polar Bears’ ability to produce adequate supplies of milk for their cubs. The study looked at Polar Bears from the western Hudson Bay in Canada. In this area, sea ice exists only seasonally.
