Salmon is a beloved seafood choice for many, known for its rich flavors and numerous health benefits. However, it’s important to be aware of certain facts that may raise concerns about consuming this popular fish. In this article, we will delve into some disturbingly shocking aspects of salmon that might make you reconsider your decision to include it in your diet.
While it’s important to consider different perspectives and make informed choices about our diets, it’s also crucial to present a balanced view. It’s crucial to evaluate these facts and make informed choices about the food we eat. Here are five potentially concerning facts about salmon that may make you reconsider consuming it:
1. Parasitic Infections

Certain species of wild salmon, particularly those caught in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, can carry parasites like tapeworms. These parasites can cause health issues if the fish is not properly cooked or handled. However, cooking salmon to the appropriate temperature can effectively kill these parasites.
In the video above, San Diego shoppers found worms inside of salmon at Costco. Apparently, this isn’t a rare occurrence. But, it can affect you negatively if you don’t freeze or cook the salmon correctly.
2. Antibiotic Use in Farming
Some salmon farms use antibiotics to prevent and treat diseases in crowded fish populations. Overuse of antibiotics in farming can contribute to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which poses a risk to human health.
Early this year it was reported that salmon exported from Scotland had come under fire for the use of antibiotics. In 2021, the industry used over 8.9 tonnes of antibiotics even after the 2017 World Health Organization plea for farmers to stop using the drugs. This warned that overuse and misuse of antibiotics are contributing to antibiotic resistance.
3. Environmental Impact

Salmon farming, especially in densely populated areas, can result in Pollution from excess feed, fecal waste, and chemicals. This Pollution can harm surrounding ecosystems, impacting other marine life and contributing to water contamination.
4. Artificial Coloring
Farmed salmon are often fed artificial dyes to enhance their pink color, as their natural diet doesn’t provide the same vibrant hue. Since consumers don’t want gray salmon, farmers feel as though they have to use these unhealthy chemicals. Concerns have been raised about the potential health effects of consuming these artificial additives, although their impact on human health is still a topic of debate.
5. Mercury Levels

Salmon, especially larger ones, can contain trace amounts of mercury, a heavy metal that can have detrimental effects on the nervous system if consumed in excess. However, the levels of mercury in salmon are generally low and are considered safe for consumption within recommended limits. But, those who are pregnant should avoid salmon.
While it’s important to be aware of the potential concerns surrounding salmon consumption, it’s essential to consider a balanced perspective. While some species may carry parasites or be subject to antibiotic use in farming, proper cooking and sourcing methods can mitigate these risks. Additionally, sustainable farming practices and responsible sourcing can help reduce the environmental impact of salmon production.
