Where is Frigiliana?
Wondering where this charming slice of paradise is? Letβs spin the globe and point our compass toward Spainβs sun-drenched south. Our destination is nestled in Andalusia, an autonomous community thatβs famous for its fiery flamenco, exquisite architecture, and enticing cuisine.
The village of Frigiliana in Southern Spain can be found within the boundaries of the MΓ‘laga province, one of Andalusiaβs eight diverse provinces.
Frigiliana is located on the eastern side of Costa del Sol, a famed strip of coastline that boasts golden sands and lively resort towns. However, Frigilianaβs charm lies in its tranquility and authenticity, offering a delightful contrast to its bustling coastal counterparts.

Frigiliana is also just a short journey north of Nerja, a popular coastal town. Itβs only about 6 kilometers away, making it a fantastic option for a quiet, picturesque escape from the beachside buzz.
Venture approximately 56 kilometers east of the bustling city of MΓ‘laga, the capital of the province, and youβll land in Frigiliana.
Itβs gently cradled by the southern slopes of the Sierra de Almijara, an impressive mountain range thatβs part of the larger Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park.
This unique positioning offers a spectacular backdrop of lush hillside, craggy mountain terrain, and breathtaking ocean vistas which all add to the charm of Frigiliana.
With plenty of small towns to explore nearby, itβs a fab place to base yourself for your Spanish adventure. Fancy learning more about this amazing country? Then click here.

3. Attend the Three Cultures Festival
Experience the vibrant celebration of Frigilianaβs multicultural heritage, featuring live music, dance performances, and a lively street market which takes place towards the end of August.
Frigiliana is often revered as the βVillage of the Three Culturesβ. This is to celebrate the hundred years that Christians, Muslims, and Jews have lived in peace together here. You can find a fountain in the town that represents this.

4. Hike the Rio Higueron Gorge
Embark on a scenic hike along the Rio Higueron, following the picturesque gorge and enjoying the stunning natural landscapes one one of Spainβs most beautiful hiking trails.
This walk is around 12km in length and is moderate in difficulty level. You can experience some truly beautiful nature on this hike! I recommend you use this map that can be found on All Trails to guide you.
The trailhead can be accessed by walking from Frigilianaβs town center.

They say thereβs no better way to get to know a place than by their food and wine. We recommend that you stop by Vinos el Lagar to sample some local sweet wines and cheeses. This spot is very rustic and local so donβt expect anything fancy.

6. Climb to Castillo de Lizar
If youβre feeling active, why not challenge yourself to visit the ruins of the Lizar Castle?
The uphill climb and narrow lanes are worth the effort for the spectacular views from Castillo de Lizar. You might even spot a donkey or two! If you are visiting during summer, start the walk early to avoid the intense heat.
7. Hike to El Fuerte
If youβre into hiking as much as we are, you might want to check out El Fuerte. This hike is perfect for those who are pretty fit and enjoy steep climbs.
Itβs a 7.7km out-and-back trail which makes for a fun day out. Like the other hike, I recommend wearing proper hiking shoes to make things easier.
