More routes must be opened to allow aid into Gaza and reduce the risk of widespread hunger and malnutrition turning to famine, the heads of key UN agencies warned on 15 January.

International aid agencies and non-governmental organisations have been trying to deliver food, water, and medical supplies to the enclave since Israel began its war on Hamas on 7 October after Hamas militants launched an attack on Israel, but serious bottlenecks continue to restrict supply lines, the World Food Programme (WFP), Unicef, and the World Health Organization said in a joint press release.

β€œPeople in Gaza risk dying of hunger just miles from trucks filled with food,” said WFP executive director Cindy McCain. β€œEvery hour lost puts countless lives at risk. We can keep famine at bay but only if we can deliver sufficient supplies and have safe access to everyone in need, wherever they are.”
