Reduce your carbon footprint and any harmful ingredients with this simple recipe. Shipping all the liquid in a liquid soap uses a lot of energy, so getting the water locally makes this a climate win!
1 bar castile soap
1 cup washing soda
1 cup borax
5 gallons water (for liquid soap)
Directions:
- Grate bar of soap with a cheese grater. This is not a necessary step – you can just skip to step 2, but note that it will take a lot longer and use a lot more electricity than grating the bar of soap first.
- Boil 1 quart water in a pot and add shredded soap. Stir until soap dissolves. Add another quart of water to dissolved soap mixture.
- Put 2 gallons hot tap water in a 5 gallon bucket. Dissolve borax and washing soda into hot water, then add the liquid soap mixture to the bucket. Add another 2 ½ gallons of water, stirring well.
Use 1 cup for full load of laundry, ½ cup for HE washers, and adjust as you see what happens (individual results will vary).
