Nearly a third (30%) of doctors currently practising medicine in the UK are considering leaving in the next 12 months to work abroad, a survey by the General Medical Council (GMC) has suggested.1
The online survey of 3154 doctors was carried out in June and July 2023 and included 1549 doctors currently working in the UK. Of these, 13% said that they were very likely to leave in the next year and a further 17% said that they were fairly likely. On top of this another 33% said that they were likely to move abroad “at some point.”
The GMC said the results suggested that as many as 96 000 doctors currently practising in the UK could be considering moving abroad soon.
