Best Water Bottles | BIOME

by gwcmag

In times gone by it wouldn’t have received a second glance, but today, a single-use plastic water bottle is widely considered an unfashionable accessory.

Growing awareness about climate change and the disastrous environmental impacts of single-use plastics, as well as the booming health and wellbeing industry’s fixation on hydration, are all factors that have led to the birth of the reusable water bottle obsession.

There are even memes floating around about having an ‘emotional support water bottle’.

Reusable water bottles really are worth the hype. Not only are they Mother Nature’s top choice, but they’re also better for your wallet and your overall health.

If you’re in the market for a new water bottle, we’re here to help you find the perfect vessel to match your own personal taste and lifestyle.

Read on for our guide to the 8 best eco-friendly water bottles.

Why Opt for a Reusable, Recyclable Drink Bottle?

While disposable plastic water bottles are accessible and easy to grab when you’re on the go, this convenience comes at a cost for the environment, your wallet, and your health.

Reusable and recyclable bottles come out on top on all three fronts.

They’re Better for the Environment

According to the Australian Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment, Australians used 3.5 million tonnes of plastic from 2018 to 2019.

One million tonnes of Australia’s annual plastic consumption comes from single-use plastics. To put this into context, it’s estimated that by 2050, the amount of plastic in the oceans will outweigh the amount of fish.

That’s a pretty confronting statistic.

Unfortunately, the environmental damage caused by single-use plastic bottles carries right through from the water being sourced to when you discard its packaging.

Bottled water is first pumped out of the ground, then packaged and transported, and finally, chilled. This process creates 60,000 tons of greenhouse gases each year in Australia.

On top of that, the manufacturing and transportation of plastic bottles require over 460,000 barrels of oil.

The damage doesn’t stop once the bottles are in our hands. In fact, 84% of the plastic we consume is sent to landfills, a significant portion of which comes from plastic bottles. Only 13% of the plastic we consume is recycled.

Once in landfills, plastic bottles take around 450 years to break down, leaching harmful toxins into the water slowly over time.

Approximately 130,000 tonnes of plastic leak into the marine environment every year, releasing chemicals and plastic fragments that are hazardous to birds, marine wildlife, and fish.

Once in the oceans, the plastics break down into small, toxic particles known as plastic smog. The smog absorbs other pollutants and is ingested by sea animals who starve due to a lack of adequate nutrients.

Reusable water bottles, however, are not disposed of this way as they’re designed to be used for years.

Most reusable water bottles are crafted from recyclable materials, meaning at the end of their useful lives, they will not end up in landfills or in oceans harming local wildlife.

They’re Cost-effective

The environmental impact is undeniable and startling, but you may also be surprised to learn how much money is spent on single-use bottled water.

The average cost of a disposable plastic water bottle is $3.50.

While this may not seem significant, this makes disposable bottled water 2000 times more expensive than tap water.

There’s a lot of money to be saved by purchasing a reusable water bottle for a higher cost up-front, but using it consistently for years and filling it up with tap water instead.

They’re Better for Your Health

There’s mounting evidence to support the idea that plastic bottled water is bad for our health/

One study found that several bottled water brands were deficient in essential minerals, such as potassium, calcium, and magnesium.

Another study found that 20% of bottled water samples had concentrations of fluoride, chlorine, and nitrate that exceeded those outlined as safe by the World Health Organisation.

Another key health concern associated with plastic bottled water surrounds the chemicals released from the bottle itself, such as bisphenol A (BPA).

BPA has been linked to breast cancer and several other dangerous health conditions.

Most non-plastic reusable water bottles — including every bottle shared below — are BPA-free and toxin-free, meaning that the bottle’s materials won’t leach harmful chemicals into its liquid contents.

Finding the Right Sustainable Water Bottle for You

There are a few things to consider when selecting your new water bottle.

Firstly, you’ll need to work out which size works best for you. If you’re carrying it around with you all day and won’t be able to refill it, a bigger bottle will work well. But if you’re taking it with you for a few hours or to locations with a drinking water tap, a smaller bottle will work perfectly (plus, it’ll be easier to lug around!).

The type of lid on the bottle is also an important factor. Some lids twist off completely, while some flip open and lock shut, and others have a straw you can sip from. Consider when and where you’ll be using your bottle. If you’re using it while driving or being active, a twist-off cap and wide-mouth bottle will be a bit ‘splashy’. But if you’re just using it at work at your desk, a twist-off cap won’t present any issues.

Lastly, consider the material of the bottle. Some reusable bottles are made from ceramic, some from glass, and others from recycled materials. If you like your water cold, an insulated bottle would be ideal. For the room-temperature water-lovers, a glass bottle will do the trick.
