Is It Safe to Eat Eggs if You Have High Cholesterol? Or Should I Avoid Them?

 

 

 

 

Many people worry about eating eggs. It’s a question I get asked quite a lot – can you eat eggs if you have high cholesterol.

Well, the good news is that yes, you can indeed enjoy eggs even if you need to watch your cholesterol.

But that sounds a bit crazy, doesn’t it? Because eggs contain quite a lot of cholesterol.

Eggs and Cholesterol

The yolk of an egg is rich in cholesterol – and that’s why so many people are concerned about eating eggs.

BUT the cholesterol in eggs does NOT have a significant effect on blood cholesterol.

However, if you eat heavily processed foods (e.g. deli meats, fast food, fatty meat), they DO affect your blood cholesterol.

So, it’s much more important to cut back on processed foods, while you continue to enjoy eggs as part of a mostly healthy diet.

Why Eggs Are Good for You

Eggs have lots of benefits – you can safely eat them several times a week if you eat mostly healthy food.

Interesting and Flexible – Of course you can serve them scrambled, poached or boiled with wholegrain toast for a healthy start to the day or a quick lunch.  But don’t forget omelets, tray bakes and other savory meals, as well as desserts.

Lots of Nutrients – Eggs have lots of healthy protein, energy, vitamins and minerals.

Unusual Nutrients – Eggs contain vitamins and minerals that can be hard to eat enough of such as vitamin D and the B vitamins. Eggs also contain biotin which is great for your hair.

 

How Do I Know if Food Contains Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is only found in foods that come from animals.

There is no cholesterol in foods that come from plants. So, there is zero cholesterol in fruit, vegetables, grains, seeds, nuts, beans, peas and lentils.

 

Summary

Even if you need to watch your cholesterol, you are safe to eat eggs as long as most of the other food you eat is healthy (i.e. unprocessed whole foods). Eggs, like other animal products, do contain cholesterol, but eggs do not significantly affect your blood cholesterol.

You’ll gain many more health benefits by cutting back on processed deli meats, bacon, sausage, convenience foods and fast food.

Enjoy eggs, they’re incredibly versatile, full of nutrients, reasonably priced and easy to use.
