Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid 2023: Torque, Efficiency – GWC Mag

The automotive industry is experiencing a shift towards greener and more sustainable transportation options, and Ford is at the forefront of this movement with their lineup of electric and hybrid vehicles. One standout model in their lineup is the 2023 Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid.

This compact crossover offers a perfect blend of efficiency, range, and practicality. Thereby making it an ideal choice for eco-conscious drivers. In this comprehensive review, we will delve into the key features. Also the performance, and my overall driving experience of the 2023 Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid.

Unleashing the Power of the Ford Escape Plug-in hybrid

The 2023 Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid builds upon the success of its predecessor. That’s another old favorite of mine: the C-Max Energi. Thereby offering a significant upgrade in size, ride comfort, interior space, and trunk capacity. As a plug-in hybrid, it combines a 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle 4-cylinder engine with an electric motor, delivering a total system output of 221 horsepower. This powertrain is paired with an electronically controlled continuously variable automatic transmission. Thereby providing seamless transitions between electric and internal combustion power.

One of the standout features of the Escape Plug-In Hybrid is its electric range. When fully charged, it can travel up to 37 miles solely on electric power. However, I woke up every morning to 41 miles. Moreover, I would then easily get another 9 miles regenerative braking. So our tests though proved the 2023 version is more efficient. Please note also this is in eco mode.

99.99 MPG on 2023 Ford Escape Plug-in hybrid

Again, we got 41 average charge based on traveling. Moreover, our average range was 99.99 miles per gallon traveling into Orange and Sullivan counties of New York.

However, when we were going downhill back home, it was a regenerative braking sponge. The C-MAX Energi efficiency is inside this Escape. For this allows for emissions-free driving during short commutes or local errands. Also, reducing your carbon footprint and saving money on fuel costs. Our test drivers have reported averaging an impressive 41-50 miles of all-electric range. That’s even with the air conditioning running. This showcases the efficiency and capability of the Escape’s electric powertrain.

Charging Made Easy

Charging the 2022 Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid is a breeze. The vehicle comes equipped with a segmented ring that displays the charge level at a glance when plugged in. This convenient feature allows you to monitor the charging progress without hassle. The Escape also offers a 110- and 240-volt charge adapter. That’s enabling you to charge the vehicle at home or at public charging stations. With a 240-volt charger, the Escape can be fully charged in as little as 3.5 to 4.5 hours. All the while a 110-volt charger will take approximately 10 to 11 hours. I charged on that because at home I sleep and stay at home usually after 7-9pm. That’s about 11 hours.

Additionally, the Escape has built-in Wi-Fi capability. Thereby allowing you to connect to your home wireless access point to download firmware upgrades and even provide an in-car Wi-Fi hotspot using the built-in cellular data service.

Also, it so easy to connect to their Wi-Fi system vs other car companies.

Four EV modes in Ford Escape plug-in hybrid

The Escape Plug-In Hybrid model** features four EV modes that allow customers to select the settings most suitable for their individual needs.

  1. In Auto EV mode, the vehicle decides whether to run on gas or electric power
  2. In EV Now mode, drivers can operate on all-electric driving
  3. In EV Later mode, drivers can switch to full gas-powered driving to conserve electric miles for later
  4. In EV Charge mode, drivers can continue to charge the battery while driving and generate electric-only miles to use later

Intuitive Technology and Comfortable Interior

Step inside the 2023 Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid, and you’ll be greeted by a spacious and comfortable interior. The rear seats offer ample legroom. Also, these seat cushions are thicker and more cushioned. Especially compared to its predecessor, the C-Max Energi. The interior features are predominantly made of re-used plastic. However, Ford has done an excellent job in making them attractive and well-designed.

Infotainment is always seemless

The infotainment system is displayed on a bright and highly visible screen, a significant improvement from the C-Max. In addition, the system supports Apple CarPlay, allowing you to seamlessly integrate your iPhone for hands-free communication and access to your favorite apps. The Escape also features a voice recognition system that allows you to control various functions of the vehicle with ease. Bluetooth audio for phone calls is excellent. Especially thanks to the 10-speaker sound system. It’s providing crystal-clear sound quality for my conversations with my wife. But those speakers don’t quit sounding amazing.

Safety and Convenience Features

The 2023 Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid comes loaded with a host of safety and convenience features to enhance your driving experience. The vehicle is equipped with Ford Co-Pilot360, a comprehensive suite of driver-assist technologies that includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. These features work in harmony to provide a safer and more enjoyable driving experience, helping you navigate the roads with confidence. The Escape also features a rearview camera with guidelines for easy maneuvering in tight spaces and a proximity warning system that alerts you when you get too close to objects surrounding the vehicle. Additionally, the Escape offers an available parallel park feature, making parking in tight spots a breeze.

Impressive Fuel Economy and Range

When it comes to fuel economy, the 2022 Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid shines. The vehicle has an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 105 MPGe (Miles Per Gallon Equivalent) combined and 40 MPG when running solely on gasoline. Our test drivers have achieved real-world fuel economy of 48.3 MPG, showcasing the efficiency of the hybrid powertrain. The Escape’s electric range of up to 37 miles allows for emissions-free driving during shorter trips, making it an excellent option for daily commuting and local errands. Even when relying on the internal combustion engine, the Escape still offers impressive fuel efficiency, making it a cost-effective choice for long-distance travel.

Driving Experience: Smooth and Responsive

The 2022 Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid delivers a smooth and responsive driving experience. The steering is tight and responsive, providing excellent maneuverability on both city streets and highways. The ride quality is comfortable, with minimal road noise penetrating the cabin. The braking system incorporates regenerative braking technology, which allows the vehicle to capture and convert kinetic energy into electric energy, effectively recharging the battery while slowing down the vehicle. The Escape also features a braking coach that provides feedback on how well you regenerate electric power with each brake application, allowing you to optimize your driving habits for maximum efficiency.

Versatile and Practical Design

The design of the 2022 Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid is both stylish and practical. The exterior features sleek lines and a modern aesthetic, giving the vehicle a sporty and dynamic look. The compact size of the Escape makes it easy to maneuver in tight spaces, while still offering ample interior room for passengers and cargo. The rear seats can be folded down to create additional cargo space, and there is even a space under the trunk floor for storing tools and other essentials. The availability of a spare tire is optional, and in its absence, the spare wheel well can be utilized for storage. Overall, the Escape’s design strikes a balance between style and functionality, making it a versatile and practical choice for everyday use.
