Happy National Root Beer Float Day! – GWC Mag

We LOVE ice cream! The only thing better than ice cream, is a holiday that celebrates ice cream. So come celebrate National Root Beer Float Day with us on August 6, 2020!

We are all about the resurgence of “craft” root beers. These frosty beverages are made with actual sugar, herbs, spices and vanilla. They make the perfect base for a root beer float!

2020 has been a year and we are looking for any and every reason to celebrate. National Root Beer Float Day can also be a low key educational opportunity with your little ones. We talk about solids (ice cream), liquids (root beer) and gases (the bubbles). We talk about where these foods come from and how they are made (see our Easy Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream Recipe). The origins of root beer alone covers herbal medicine, colonial history and nutritional science. You can get as nerdy as you want with your celebration.

We also love to experiment making floats with other sodas. Adventure Dad and I actually met working at an ice cream store that made cream sodas and floats in a variety of flavors.

We are so excited our friends at Virgil’s sent us some of their all-natural handcrafted sodas to celebrate National Root Beer Float Day this year. You can grab your own pack of Virgils’s on your next Target run, add it to your Amazon cart or in-store at Safeway or Frys Food Store. You can also try your luck in the sweepstakes below:

Make Your Own Ice Cream

What is a root beer float without creamy vanilla ice cream? Make ice cream at home with the kids using our Easy Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream Recipe. It is so easy, even our 4 year old can do it (with a little assistance of course). This vanilla ice cream makes the perfect creamy companion to the bubbly, spicy and bold root beer flavor.

Why we love handcrafted root beer

This is not the root beer of my childhood. Virgil’s handcrafted root beer offers bold, classic flavors without the preservatives, artificial colors, or GMO-sourced ingredients. Every ingredient in Virgil’s is all-natural. That means no preservatives, no aspartame and no artificial colors.

Virgil’s rich, yet creamy Root Beer is crafted from a perfectly balanced, natural blend of 15 roots and spices. These handcrafted sodas come in a variety of flavors: Orange Soda, Root Beer, Black Cherry, Lemon Lime, Vanilla Cream, Cola. There are even zero sugar options.

Zero Sugar Soda

We love that Virgil’s also offers a collection of zero sugar handcrafted sodas. Usually the sugar and sugar substitutes put me off from serving my kids soda, but Virgil’s handcrafts sodas with cane sugar or natural sweeteners ⏤ Erythritol, Stevia, Monk Fruit. I know Erythritol might sounds scary, but it’s actually a natural sweetener just like Stevia. Virgil’s Zero Sugar Root Beer is zero calories and certified ketogenic for those looking for a healthier rendition of the summertime treat.

How To Make The Perfect Root Beer Float At Home

No matter what kind of root beer or ice cream you choose, follow these steps to root beer bliss!

  • Grab your favorite glass mug (preferably fresh from the freezer). Drop one scoop of vanilla ice cream into the bottom of the glass.
  • Pour Virgil’s root beer (or other handcrafted soda) over the scoop until it fills up about halfway
  • Drop another scoop of vanilla ice cream into the mix
  • Fill to the top of the glass with Virgil’s!
  • Grab spoon and Enjoy!
