How to Have a Green Getaway Abroad – GWC Mag

Want to Go on Holiday Abroad? Great – Make Sure it’s a Green Getaway for Perfect Memories!

Looking to reduce the impact of your travels? There’s no doubt that travel and tourism have a significant impact on the environment. Aviation alone accounts for roughly 2% of global CO2 emissions.  Like yourself, most people want to travel and live life, understandably. Tours of Vietnam or retirement retreats to Sicily are too tempting for most, so it comes down to a question of how they can be done more sustainably – a green getaway, in other words.

In this article, we’ll discuss how you can have a “green getaway” to see the world while minimising your impact.

Travel sustainably where possible

It’s challenging to see much of the world without flying, especially if you’ve only got a certain amount of time off. While you can try to reduce the amount you fly throughout the year, pay equally as much attention to your methods of transport while you’re away.

Walking and cycling are great ways to see the sights in a range of destinations. If you’re not able to, getting public transport or taking e-scooters is a lot more sustainable than private taxis. It’s often tempting to fly domestically when seeing various places in a country, but trains and buses are cost-effective across much of the world and give you a more authentic travel experience.

Choose sustainable accommodation for a green getaway

Your choice of accommodation has a significant role to play in the impact of your travels. Energy efficiency, water conservation, the use of locally sourced materials and recycling initiatives are all signs of an environmentally friendly holiday accommodation.

Check the credentials of any provider you’re considering. If they’re proud to display green certificates or industry awards based on sustainability, they will likely be doing their part to reduce the impact of your travels. These accommodations may cost a little more, but that’s the price you pay for eco-tourism and protecting the planet.

Minimise single-use plastics and waste

The idea of leaving no trace has become synonymous with ecotourism and sustainable travel. Leave somewhere as close to how you found it as possible. This means avoiding excess waste, littering and other disturbances.

Single-use plastics are a common example of leaving a trace and it accounts for much of the waste accumulated by tourists. Carrying a reusable water bottle, recycling products that can be recycled and actively choosing packaging-less products are all green choices you can make while you’re away.

Support sustainable tourism initiatives

Many companies in tourist hotspots push sustainability to the side in favour of profitability. But you, as the traveller, can make the effort to seek out sustainable tourism initiatives and support them.

Whether it’s wildlife conservation projects, tours supporting local communities or ecological tours led by expert local guides, the more you can put your money into positive causes for the planet, the more you can offset the unavoidable impacts of your travel and have a green getaway.
