James Howard Swallow – GWC Mag

bmj;382/sep22_10/p2151/FAF1faJames Howard Swallow (“Jim”) was born in Yorkshire. He went up to Queens’ College in 1946 and achieved first class honours in medicine. He then went to the Royal London for clinical medicine. After a period as a postgraduate fellow in physiology at the Mayo Clinic in the USA he was appointed as a consultant physician with a specialist interest in gastroenterology in Chelmsford, Essex, in 1965. In Chelmsford he set up one of the country’s first medical academic units in the UK. He was an excellent clinician, extremely perceptive, with a wide experience of other subspecialties. He was brilliant teacher with an amazing memory; doctors who trained with him remember him fondly. He retired in 1990 and attended Braintree College to complete German O and A levels before completing a mathematics degree at the Open University at the age of 77.He was a keen sportsman.
