In a heartwarming display of compassion, Reddit user u/Fluffy-Designer, recently took a chance on a black cat labeled as the “least adoptable.” Black cats, unfortunately, often face being overlooked in shelters, making them more challenging to find forever homes for.
Having previously rescued animals but taking a break to focus on other aspects of life, u/Fluffy-Designer resumed her role as a rescuer upon learning about the plight of cats in need. During a visit with friends, a fellow rescuer shared stories of cats in their care, specifically mentioning those diagnosed with Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV).
FIV, a blood-borne virus in the cat family similar to HIV, attacks and weakens the immune system. Despite the lack of a cure, only a small percentage of cats, approximately 1 to 5 percent, show exposure evidence to the virus, according to VCA Animal Hospitals. Undeterred by the diagnosis, u/Fluffy-Designer decided to bring home a cat named Duke, showcasing a resilient spirit in the face of challenges.
Duke not only grapples with FIV but also struggles with anxiety, leading him to pull out his hair. Previously boarded at a vet for a few weeks, it was during this time that Duke’s anxiety seemingly began. Discovering his aversion to vet visits the hard way, u/Fluffy-Designer remained undaunted, stating, “There’s not a lot they can throw at me that will bother me—I’ve seen some stuff,” in a caption.
Since finding his forever home, Duke has stopped pulling out his hair, and his new parent describes him as sweet, gentle, and easygoing. Despite his troubled past, Duke has formed a close bond with u/Fluffy-Designer’s 15-year-old cat, demonstrating the transformative power of love and compassion.
