Only 11% of US children are up-to-date with COVID vaccinations – GWC Mag

According to the CDC, only 11% of children ages 6 months to 17 years are up-to-date with the current COVID vaccinations. That rate is about half of the COVID-19 vaccination rate for the whole US population — 21.4% for adults 18 and older.

This is disappointing because COVID-19 variants are still with us and they are still causing harm.

I will review the data and show where we are with COVID-19 vaccinations.

COVID-19 vaccinations data for children under 18

As you can see from the chart above from the CDC, the number of children under 18 who are up-to-date with the current COVID-19 vaccine has remained flat since the newest booster became available. Despite constant reminders from healthcare professionals and public health officials, it appears that this number has remained stubbornly low.

The states with the highest COVID-19 vaccination rate are Washington, Oregon, Colorado, New Mexico, Kansas, Nebraska, Minnesota, Maryland, DC, Massachusetts, Vermont, and New Hampshire. The best state, as of January 23, 2024, is Massachusetts which has about a third of children receiving the up-to-date COVID-19 vaccinations. On the other hand, Louisana was the lowest-ranked state, with only 3.1% of children up-to-date.

Why children should get vaccinated

I want to just list out the reasons why your children should get the current COVID-19 vaccine.

  1. COVID-19 vaccines can help prevent children from getting seriously sick if they do get COVID-19. COVID-19 vaccination continues to protect children against severe disease and hospitalization.
  2. It can help children get back to a more normal life, such as attending school, playing sports, and socializing with friends.
  3. It protects their family, friends, and teachers from getting infected by reducing the transmission of the virus.
  4. It prevents children from developing long-term complications or even death from COVID-19. COVID-19 is the seventh leading cause of death for children ages 5–11 in the U.S.
  5. It contributes to ending the pandemic by increasing the overall immunity of the population.

Protect your children, with a safe and effective vaccine, against a still dangerous disease. It’s the right thing to do.
