Photo: geoff coombs Behind the Photo In frigid, blizzard-like conditions, photographer Geoff Coombs, Master Diving Instructor Andrew Ryzebol and diver Jonah Kest trudged 20 metres offshore. Sawing an entry hole in the six-inch-thick ice, they slid into the icy waters of Georgian Bay. Coombs initially picked up the sport as an avenue to capture breathtaking photos, but his interest developed into a passion. “It’s something that has challenged my mind, body and creativity,” he says. “Exploration is at the heart of why we ice dive,” Coombs continues. “Freediving in the winter is as much about walking on and navigating ice floes, managing the cold and cutting through the ice, as it is about actually diving.” Check the ML Podcast!
