Many people now fret over how their behavior contributes to climate change, and the complexities of the issue can feel overwhelming.

That’s especially true for winter sports athletes, who often face criticism for advocating for reduced emissions while jet-setting around the world to ride gas-guzzling snowmobiles and helicopters. It’s not a new revelation. But it’s a conundrum that The Hypocrite, a collaborative film from Teton Gravity Research (TGR) and Protect Our Winters, addresses through the lived experience of skier Amie Engerbretson.

Through Engerbretson’s introspective journey, the documentary navigates the tension between environmental advocacy and carbon-intensive sports. It aims to dismantle the culture of blame and guilt surrounding individual actions, emphasizing unity instead. While most of us aren’t professional athletes, many viewers will likely relate to the predicament Engerbretson feels.

“I’m living the dream,” Engerbretson said. “But this life is killing the dream. By burning fossil fuels, I’m contributing to the death of the thing that I love most.”
