Bottled water has always been popular as a convenient and seemingly healthier alternative to tap water. In the last ten years, bottled water consumption in the United States has increased by almost 40%. This means that, on average, a person consumes almost 47 gallons of bottled water per year! Although bottled water seems like a better option health-wise as tap water quality decreases, it is not as good for you as you may think. It is crucial to examine the potential negative impacts on public health. This article explores the reasons why bottled water may be detrimental to public health, ranging from the absence of essential minerals to the risk of dehydration and limited access to safe drinking water.
1. Lack of Fluoride
Most tap water sources are fortified with fluoride, which helps prevent tooth decay. However, many bottled water brands do not contain fluoride, leading to potential oral health issues, especially in areas where tap water is not fluoridated.
Oral health is particularly impacted by fluoride consumption. The first community to add fluoride to their drinking water in Grand Rapids, Michigan showed a 60-65% reduction in the prevalence of dental issues.
2. Reduced Mineral Content
Unlike tap water, which can contain essential minerals like calcium and magnesium, bottled water often lacks these vital nutrients. Regular consumption of low-mineral water may contribute to mineral deficiencies over time. Without calcium in your body, you may have issues with your bones, nerves, hormones, and blood vessels!
3. Dehydration Risk
Some studies suggest that people who primarily consume bottled water may be at a higher risk of dehydration. This is because bottled water often lacks the electrolytes necessary for optimal hydration, which can be found in tap water or specialized hydration drinks.
4. Altered pH Levels
Certain brands of bottled water may have an altered pH level, which can disrupt the body’s natural acid-base balance. Consistently consuming water with an imbalanced pH can potentially lead to digestive issues and mineral imbalances.
5. Limited Access to Safe Drinking Water

Relying solely on bottled water can be a challenge in areas where safe tap water is not readily available or during emergencies. This lack of access to clean drinking water can put public health at risk, particularly in underserved communities. According to a UN conference, a quarter of the world’s population doesn’t have access to safe drinking water.
6. Increased Consumption of Sugary Drinks

When people choose bottled water as their primary beverage, they may be less inclined to choose healthier options like plain tap water or unsweetened drinks. This can contribute to higher consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages, which are linked to obesity, diabetes, and other health problems.
7. Weakening of the Immune System
Drinking exclusively bottled water may result in a weakened immune system due to the absence of necessary minerals and potential microbial contamination. The lack of exposure to certain minerals and microbes in tap water can hinder the development of a robust immune response.
8. Negative Impact on Infant Health
Bottled water should not be used to prepare infant formula, as it may contain higher levels of certain contaminants compared to tap water. Using unregulated bottled water for infants can potentially lead to adverse health effects, such as gastrointestinal issues or developmental problems.
It is important to note that the potential negative impacts on public health may vary depending on the specific brand and quality of bottled water. While bottled water offers convenience, it is important to consider its potential downsides. The absence of fluoride and essential minerals, the risk of dehydration, and altered pH levels can impact public health. Additionally, limited access to safe drinking water and the potential for increased consumption of sugary drinks raise concerns. By being aware of these factors, individuals can make more informed choices about their drinking water sources and prioritize their overall health and well-being.
