The Best Toilet Freshener “Bombs” are Green, Safe and Easy!
It’s really useful to have these toilet freshener bombs on hand – they can keep the bathroom fresh between cleans, and they’re also handy if a guest arrives unexpectedly.
I found a great recipe for making them yourself at One Good Thing, which I’ve adapted.
Make these toilet freshener “bombs” and store them. When you need one, just pop it into the toilet bowl, it will fizz away and leave the bowl fresh, clean and smelling lovely!
Recipe: Toilet Freshener “Bombs”
- Combine the baking soda and citric acid in a bowl.
- Now add the water and essential oils – you may find it easier to add the liquids to a small spray bottle and spray the mist onto the dry ingredients – this will help to stop it fizzing (you don’t want it to fizz yet!).
- Test the mixture – it should form a nice clump in your hand. If it’s still too powdery, add a little more water.
- Then, place the mixture into an ice tray or silicon mould, packing it in firmly.
- Allow to dry for several hours, then tip out the bombs and store in an airtight container. They’re ready to use!
Notes on the Toilet Freshener Bomb Recipe

I tried making it with fresh lemon juice instead of citric acid – this would have made it even more green and eco friendly. But it was difficult to control the fizzing – the dry citric acid is easier to use.
Why does it work? Baking soda is readily available and used all over the home for cleaning purposes, and it deodorizes. The citric acid is useful for hard water stains – and it also fizzes on contact with the baking soda so you get the “bomb” effect. And of course the essential oils help to reduce germs and bacteria, and release a wonderful fresh scent.
