Green Business Vegan Outreach’s Green Tuesday Initiative is now a Global Movement – GWC Mag gwcmagSeptember 18, 2023055 views After 5 years of successfully helping institutions in India reduce their food-driven carbon footprint, Vegan Outreach’s Green Tuesday Initiative is now working with institutions in Vietnam to minimize the impact of the food they serve on the environment. Green Tuesday Initiative is a campaign by Vegan Outreach to help institutions reduce their environmental footprint by making small changes in the food they serve. This includes serving meals with no or minimal animal products, introducing more plant-based vegan dishes, and raising awareness about the impact of animal agriculture on the environment and our health. Animal agriculture is one of the biggest polluters of the environment, generating over 15% of the total global greenhouse gas emissions. According to BBC’s Climate Change Food Calculator, producing 1 kg of chicken releases over 18 kgs of greenhouse gasses, whereas producing the same amount of beans generates less than 1 kg of greenhouse gases. The immense water usage and deforestation involved in raising animals for food contribute to the looming danger of climate change. So far, 40+ institutions in India have partnered with the Green Tuesday Initiative to replace 3.3 million pounds of animal products with plant-based vegan foods. Some of the notable partner institutions include Tech Mahindra, Carl Zeiss, Zostel, Hetero Drugs, Pondicherry University, Gautam Buddha University, and Lovely Professional University. Talking about its impact, Bhavya Vatrapu, Senior Campaigns Manager for the Green Tuesday Initiative, said, “India and many other Asian countries are becoming increasingly vulnerable to climate change. Choosing to serve more climate-friendly food would be the first step in understanding and reducing the impact of food on the planet and people’s health. The Initiative also delivers on 7 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. We look forward to working with corporate organizations and educational institutions in Vietnam towards building a green and abundant future for all. Our work in India will continue to grow simultaneously.” Since 2018, the Green Tuesday Initiative has been at the forefront of fighting climate change through diet change. The initiative spearheaded by Vegan Outreach helps corporations, colleges and universities combat climate change by offering more plant-based food on their campuses, at no additional cost to the institutions. Vegan Outreach is an international nonprofit organization aiming to bring food sustainability, fight climate change, and reduce animal suffering by promoting a vegan lifestyle through educating and providing resources to the public and increasing the accessibility of vegan food. All institutions that serve meals on their premises can introduce the Green Tuesday Initiative. Readers can learn more about Vegan Outreach or connect with the Green Tuesday Initiative.
