Here’s Why It’s So Good to Invest in Electric and Hybrid Vehicles

Since the turn of the millennium, a flurry of electric and hybrid models have joined traditional fuel-powered vehicles in the car market. However, higher initial costs and limited charging infrastructure meant that manufacturers saw slow sales compared to diesel and petrol car purchases.

Almost 15 years on, electric and hybrid car sales are rapidly rising following much investment in the required technologies.

Take a look at the benefits of owning electric and hybrid vehicles that might make now the right time to invest.

Better for the environment

Firstly and most importantly, electric and hybrid vehicles are better for the environment.

There is a clear link between man-made CO2 and global warming, and transport is responsible for almost 25% of worldwide emissions. Moving away from fuel-powered transport is a key part of government plans to reach net zero – the UK, for example, is banning the sale of new petrol- or diesel-engine cars from 2035.

  • Hybrid cars run on an electric motor with support from a fuel-powered engine when needed, keeping carbon emissions to a minimum.
  • Electric vehicles run on a rechargeable battery and have no direct carbon emissions at all.

Moving away from traditional cars is therefore a sure-fire way to reduce your carbon footprint.

Cost-effective car ownership

Electric and hybrid vehicles also offer drivers a more cost-effective form of car ownership.

Primarily this comes from saving on the cost of fuel. Electricity is much cheaper than gas / petrol, so even factoring in charging costs, you will spend less each year.

As electric cars require no oil refills and have a system that’s more resistant to wear than a combustible engine, you’ll save on servicing costs too.

New hybrid and battery-powered vehicles still require a more significant initial investment than traditional vehicles but affordable used cars are increasingly available, and the mass-production of electric cars is reducing the price of new models on the market.

Hybrid and Electric Vehicles Offer Improved performance

Electric and hybrid cars have improved performance compared to traditional vehicles too. This wasn’t necessarily true when they emerged onto the market, but manufacturers have quickly created systems that surpass the capabilities of combustible engines – and they run more quietly to boot.

Electric cars in particular have become more efficient in recent years. They can go further – most new EVs can get from London to Glasgow on one charge with miles to spare – and charge quicker than ever before. The exact distance and charging time will depend on the battery, make and model of your chosen EV.
