A collar with ID tags can help to ensure that your beloved pup is returned safely should they ever get lost. However, a recent TikTok video posted to the account @finneasandmilo explains why it is important to take a dog’s collar off after coming inside.

@finneasandmilo

We came in from a walk and he was brushing on the side of the sofa (he wanted his fleece off) and his tag got caught in a matter of seconds. This wasn’t causing him any distress or danger, but a reminder that dogs can can get caught on anything in seconds. Such a simple thing can save your dogs life 😢 #caughtcollar #dogsafety #keepyourdogsafe

In the video, a black dog can be seen standing by a couch. As the camera moves closer, it is revealed that the pup is stuck to the couch by his collar. Text overlay on the video reads. “Reminder to NEVER leave your dog home alone with a collar on. They can get caught on ANYTHING in a matter of seconds.” The caption goes on to explain the situation. It says, “We came in from a walk and he was brushing on the side of the sofa (he wanted his fleece off) and his tag got caught in a matter of seconds. This wasn’t causing him any distress or danger, but a reminder that dogs can can get caught on anything in seconds. Such a simple thing can save your dog’s life.”

A collar can indeed pose a strangulation risk to a dog. If it becomes caught on something, the dog may panic. This could inadvertently tighten the collar and choke them. Common objects that collars may become stuck on include crates, fences, furniture, or heating and cooling systems. However, it is always important to ensure that your animal companion is microchipped as well. A microchip can make sure they are returned safely if they escape without their collar on.
