In Florida, a silent and deadly invasion is underway by highly toxic toads posing a severe threat to pets and potentially to humans. These invasive amphibians, known as bufo toads, cane toads, or giant marine toads, have established thriving populations in the state, particularly in central and south Florida, south of the I-4 corridor.
Originally introduced in the 1930s and 40s to control agricultural pests in sugar cane fields, these toads have now become a menace. Their toxic secretions can prove fatal to pets within minutes of contact, with symptoms ranging from disorientation and seizures to foaming at the mouth. The situation has raised alarm among pet owners and wildlife authorities alike.
Jennifer Southall, a seasoned bufo toad trapper, shared her concerns, emphasizing the alarming reproductive capabilities of these toads. “One bufo toad female can lay over 30,000 eggs at a time,” she revealed. “And it takes just three days for the eggs to hatch, leading to a population explosion around the summer months.”
Dogs, in particular, are vulnerable to bufo toad poisoning. Southall recounted her own pet’s harrowing encounter with one of these toxic creatures, emphasizing the severity of the consequences if left untreated. Unfortunately, pets are not the only ones at risk; humans can also suffer from severe skin and eye irritation upon contact with the toads.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has provided guidelines for dealing with encounters with these deadly amphibians. Immediate action is crucial if a pet comes into contact with a toxic toad. Washing toxins out of the mouth, wiping gums and tongue, and seeking veterinary care are essential steps to mitigate the effects of poisoning.
Furthermore, preventive measures are necessary to protect both pets and humans from potential encounters with these lethal amphibians. Keeping yards well-maintained by mowing grass, eliminating hiding spots, and removing outdoor clutter can reduce the risk of attracting these toads and their prey. Additionally, pet owners are advised to supervise their pets, especially during nocturnal hours when bufo toads are most active.
