Recent protests outside the RSPCA headquarters in Horsham, West Sussex, have drawn attention to accusations of the charity’s Support of gas chambers in pig slaughter. Vegan activists, led by prominent campaigner Joey Carbstrong, have condemned the RSPCA’s endorsement of the practice, sparking a heated debate on animal welfare standards in the meat industry.

The focal point of the activists’ ire is the RSPCA Assured sticker, a branding used to signify compliance with animal welfare standards in farms, abattoirs, hatcheries, and hauliers. Despite its intended purpose of ensuring humane treatment, activists argue that the RSPCA’s endorsement of such products is misleading and tantamount to condoning animal cruelty. At the heart of the controversy is the method of stunning and slaughtering pigs using carbon dioxide (CO2) gas chambers. Activists decry this practice as “abhorrent, barbaric, and cruel,” emphasizing the distressing experience endured by pigs subjected to CO2 stunning. The RSPCA itself has criticized the use of CO2, advocating for a phase-out and calling for research into more humane alternatives.

Joey Carbstrong and his supporters assert that the RSPCA’s condemnation of CO2 stunning does not go far enough. They demand a complete dissociation from pork products and an unequivocal denouncement of CO2 gas chambers. To them, the RSPCA’s endorsement of meat products from facilities utilizing CO2 stunning undermines its credibility as a champion of animal welfare.

In response, the RSPCA reaffirms its commitment to improving the welfare of farmed animals and highlights its advocacy efforts, including the successful prohibition of battery cages for hens and sow stalls for pigs. The organization defends the RSPCA Assured scheme as a means to elevate welfare standards within the meat industry, acknowledging the need for more humane slaughter methods. While the National Pig Association acknowledges that CO2 stunning is not flawless, it contends that it remains the most “humane” and effective option available commercially. This assertion underscores the complexity of balancing animal welfare with practical considerations within the meat production process.

The clash between activists and the RSPCA underscores broader tensions surrounding animal welfare in agriculture. As consumers become increasingly conscientious about the source of their food, the debate surrounding ethical farming practices intensifies. The protests are a reminder of the imperative to prioritize the well-being of animals in all facets of food production.
